For MP3 files, speed in the range of 3MB/s are to be expected since they are small files. However for the MKV you should have at least something close to the maximum fast ethernet speed. I got 23MB/s on my 104 which is basically a 102 with 2 more slots.
Yes, the reset would erase the data. That's why I suggested it right away, before you get your data on the disk. Afterwards it would be harder to do so (even if you should have backups that would allow you to, but the transfer time would be long). That's not an obligation because I think the improvements apply to large volumes or nearly full volumes. Still it is advised.
Did the direct connection test give better results than via the router ?
