RN104 - keeps freezing after 6.2.3 & 6.2.4 updates #25088243

Hi,
I seem to be having the same issue a lot of people are having.

I was originally running 6.2.2 and everything was working perfectly. I was prompted on the admin page that a new firmware 6.2.3 was available so I upgraded. Everything seemed ok but after some time the device slowed right down and then became unreachable. I had to pull the power out to get it to reboot and come back online, then between 6-12 hours it would lock up again. This happened 5 or 6 times and then I noticed 6.2.4 was available so I installed this. 6-12 hours later it locked up again and I had to power cycle it again.

Is there a fix to stop this from locking up?

Thanks,
Dale

  • Hi Stephen,

I am running 6.2.5 and have been since it was release late last month.

I'm only running plex (newest version from netgear App Store) and I just removed the default antivirus software to see if that was causing it. So basically just running plex.

A few months ago I was seeing odd lockups when plex was refreshing metadata.  The system became unresponsive to ping, and I needed to pull the plug.  I haven't seen that lately, though I haven't rescanned all the metadata lately either.

You might try manually rescanning, and see if that provokes the problem for you.  Also, perhaps install the newest version of plex (it should be here: http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=9)

  • Ok great thanks for the tip. I have just updated to the newest version of plex tonight. I'll see if that makes a difference. How do I manually rescan the metadata? Are you referring to updating the library data for my media in plex?

      Yes.

FWIW, I wish there was a way to turn the on-line searches completely off for audio, but that doesn't seem possible.

  • Hey,

So 24 hours in and my NAS hasn't missed a beat.

    Things that I changed.

Updated to the way version of PLEX (only app I am running). Manually forced a library update of PLEX. I suspect the version of plex I was running may have had a bit to do with the issues I was having but not really sure.

Disabled the default antivirus (not the one in the App Store).

Disabled the power down feature (which I had set up to turn of every day at midnight and back on around 4pm).

Set the spin down feature to stay on but set it to spin the disks down after 10 minutes of inactivity.

Changed the snapshots for my largest folder (videos/movies/TV shows to weekly instead of daily).

I'll post another update in a few days and see.

Oh and also running the latest firmware 6.2.5.

    Thanks for the tips guys!

Anyone else figure any fixes for this? I'm still having occasional Crashes (about once per week). Seems to happen when I access the drives, but can't really be sure.

The only way to get out of the crash is to do a hard reboot (power on and off with the power bar, as the buttons on the unti don't respond).

      Anyone?

  • Hey phillipGood,

I have had no issue what so ever since upgrading the firmware. I also upgraded to the newest version of PLEX (the only app I am running) on the NAS. I also have the unit set to power down every night at 1am and power back up at 4pm with the 6.2.5 firmware (as I thought this may have been causing the issues before) and it has no issues when powering back on since upgrading.

Suggest looking nice at your firmware first! It fixed all the issues for me!

    Cheers,

    Josh

Hi Josh, I am on 6.2.5 and this is where the problems started. I used to be on 6.2.2 and avoided 6.2.3 and 6.2.4. I do not have PLEX or AntiVirus running on mine (uninstalled after your post) but I do have SickBeard and SABNZB running. However, SAB and SickBeard do not really get accessed all that much and these crashes seem to be happening when either SnapShots were being takes (since disabled) or when I am accessing the drives. I'm starting to wonder if 6.2.5 ws installed improperly, or perhaps didn't flash correctly.

Just to make sure you are on the same page, you also had the issue where the buttons on the unit were unresponsive and you could not access neither the drives nor the ReadyNas GUI?

      Cheers,

      Phil

fwiw, 6.2.5 is working fine on my RN102.

You could try overinstalling the firmware from the web ui.

  • Phil,

Yes correct exact same issues the unit would be unresponsive and the power button on the front would not work. The only way to fix was to physically remove power source to reboot. Suggest trying to remove all apps - just to rule them out and set snapshots to weekly instead of daily. Also do you have the NAS mapped as a network drive in Windows? I found that this was causing me issues when to so I can still access from my Windows machine but don't have it mapped as a network drive.

    Cheers,

    Josh
