RN314 - Cannot create volume on two new disks
Hi all, I am trying to install two disks on my RN314 NAS and for some reason I cannot create a new volume. The two disks are coming from an old ReadyNAS Duo v2. There are already two disks on the R...

Hi Jenn,
well, it is difficult to define it as a "solution", since it did not solve anything. It is more an partial explanation of what happened.
Apparently the reason why the NAS did not allowed me to create a new volume on the two new disks is because it automatically set the first volume as RAID 5. I don't know why, I don't know how, but when I plugged the drives coming from the old NAS it changed the configuration of the first two.
The result is that I have a single volume which includes the space available from both drives.
I left it configured in that way, for my needs it is fine also like this.

Hi Stephen, I tried with both disks, but I cannot create a new volume... I will try again...
--edit: I confirm, tried again to format both disks, but the new volume button is still disabled.

Ok, this is what happened. For some reason I don't understand, the NAS decided to create a unique volume with the 500GB+1TB drives. Once it finished the resync operation, it merged the two drives together and that was why it was not allowing me to create a second volume on the two new disks.
I am pretty sure that this was not the configuration I set with the first two drives... but anyway it is fine, I can keep it in this way.

That is the expected behavior with the default XRAID setup You could have gotten something different if you had switched to flexraid before adding the 1 TB drives.
But XRAID did give you the maximum possible space with protection from a single drive failure - 2 TB (1.8 TiB).

That's funny, in almost eight years I have been using Netgear ReadyNAS it is the first time I see this behavior. And I have been adding many times disks...
Well, now I have learned something new :)
