RN516 stuck in "Booting" with 33%

Hi!

I hope someone can help.

I am running an RN51600 with 6 3TB harddisks in RAID 10. Since I bought the device in Feb 2016 in replacement for an NV+ everything was running fine.

The device is running the latest firmware that was available 2 weeks ago.

Yesterday morning the device was shut down by pre-defined time and was supposed to reboot yesterday evening. Until then, there was no indication of any problem. When I came home yesterday evening, the device was stuck at "Booting" showing 31% progress. Which at this time must already have been 3-4 hours. As the device was not responding, I tried to shut it down hard via the power button. Afterwards I tried to reboot again. Device came up, showed "Booting" and stopped at 26%. After an hour it was at 31% and this morning has reached 33%.

It seems like I am in trouble. As I tried not to risk restoring all data on the drive, I am careful at what I should do next.

I read that I could try to reinstall the firmware from flash via the boot menu. According to documentation this should not risk loosing the data. Any other suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

Thanks and regards,

  Michael

  • Thank you for the suggestion.

I tried booting in Read-Only. Did not work. For this mode, booting got stuck at 15%.

Finally, I decided to select the rewrite of the firmware from flash memory via the boot menu.

Actually, this solved the problem. NAS started again without problems. Just to be on the safe side, I downloaded the same and latest OS version 6.6 manually from Netgear homepage and reinstalled it via the manual firmware update function, just in case something went wrong when I installed OS 6.6.

NAS now seems to run smooth.

Bad feeling stays: the log files in the GUI do not show anything. Last thing they showed was the automated shutdown. First thing the showed again was the reinstall of the OS from the flash memory today.

I downloaded more log files. I will check whether there is something in those logs that gives and indication on what lead to this situation.
