RN600-TL / X6 Update / Boot Problems

I bought a used RN600-TL / X6 to act as backup to my existing unit. When I powered it up, I got a Corrupt Boot error in the RAIDar screen. I did a factory reset, and reinitialized the 4 drives to RAID-X. When that finished, I went into setup and was prompted to update the RAIDiator software to 4.1.13 (from 4.1.6). The update failed, and the NAS wouldn’t reboot. I did another reset, thinking I would skip the update this time (or go to 4.1.10 only, what my other unit is running) but during the disk init, the NAS disappeared off the RAIDar screen. LEDs were out, with only the Power light slowly pulsing, no other activity for several hours. Again, it wouldn’t boot. Next I tried a flash recovery from USB, using “ReadyNAS_USB_Flash_Recovery-4.1.12.img” written with Rawrite32. I got the pulsing power light plus the number 1 light steady, which if I’m reading the ReadyNAS-LED.pdf correctly, means “RAIDiator image does not match NAS platform, contact tech support to convert OEM NAS to ReadyNAS.” I’m having trouble finding other recovery files on the Netgear and ReadyNAS sites. I know I’ve probably made some fatal errors here, and may have ruined my “new” X6, but if any one has a suggestion, direction, pronouncement, etc… I sure would appreciate it! Thanks in advance, John

  • mdgm was very helpfully trying to assist via PMs, but my last three responses to his suggestions are stuck in the outbox of this forum. I am left at "TFTP_REQ" in the info column of RAIDar. Can anyone provide a link to directions and/or downloads pertinent to restoring my device? As far as I can tell, the Netgear / ReadyNAS menus here no longer point to anything relevant to this old tech... Thanks in advance, John

PMs stay in the outbox until read.

Unfortunately I got caught up with some other work.

That means you need to do TFTP boot recovery or USB Boot Recovery.

    USB Boot Recovery is safer.

Power off the NAS and try doing a USB Boot Recovery of 4.1.8. That image is a bit smaller so is more likely to work

Is this a Rev A with a CF card?
  • To finish up this thread... mdgm through many PMs and finally telnet access was able to determine the problem - 3 of the 4 drives were throwing ATA errors, causing the failures with firmware updates, resets & etc. Replacing the drives solved all issues with the NAS. Very happy I asked my question here. Thanks again to mdgm!
