No need for USB recovery for this - that isn't needed for legacy NAS. Also no need to review the wiki - just download and install the prebuilt binary. After it is installed, you need to do a factory default.

For your convenience, here is a direct link to the binary image you need: RAIDiator-x86-4.2 .31-downgrade

The bios update add-on is here: install http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin

Note that if you have a spare disk, you can first

power down
remove your current disks (labeling by slot)
add the single disk
do a factory install and basic setup on OS 6
downgrade, and install the bios
upgrade again
power down, and reinstall the current disks in their original slots.

This avoids rebuilding the data volume twice (so is will be quite a bit faster).

Thanks a lot for the reply. I actually got it going last night (i think)!

i was able to downgrade OS6 to OS4.2.31 by renaming the OS4.2.31 bin to the exact same name as the OS6.img. then i was able to upload OS4.2.31 via the firmware updater in OS6.

I couldn't find the command that gave me the firmware version info, so i haven't verified that i am infact using the latest bios for the nas, but i'm pretty sure all went through just fine.. i didn't get any error messages when it uploaded, so..

afterwards i re-updated back to 6.10.7.

The only thing that's odd, and maybe you can verify, is that under the system window, where it shows the processor and system fan, and the core and system temps (with the thermometers), apparently there should be on thermometer per core (i'm currently running the stock cpu, so it should show 2 thermometers)... Mine only shows 1 thermometer.

is that correct?

  the following is what i'm talking about.. granted, mine should only show 2 cores, but you get my point... mine only shows 1 core..

    Where is that screenshot from?
    
    All my desktop ReadyNAS only show the CPU temp - nothing about each core.
