rsync between devices not handling sparse files

I'm using a pair of ReadyNAS NVXs for storing backups of VMs - the backup software stores to one NVX, which then overnight duplicates itself to the second in another building via a scheduled built-in backup job using rsync.

I've noticed that this doesn't handle sparse files however. The files currently on NVX A total 930Gb, while the exact copy on NVX B total 1.5Tb. Looking closer, I can see that those VMs that have sparse files stored on NVX A are using the full disk size on NVX B:

16825348 /nasa/backup/AD1/AD1-2013-09-17--1/AD1-flat.vmdk
41943044 /nasb/backup/AD1/AD1-2013-09-17--1/AD1-flat.vmdk

Obviously this means more space is used on NVX B, plus the duplication time is significantly increased as more data has to be copied over the LAN.

I'd prefer not to use NFS/FTP as they don't allow for full mirroring - deletion of files from B that have been removed from A (we just keep one or two datestamped snapshots and older files are automatically removed by the backup script) - the only way we'd achieve that is by regularly performing a full backup, but that would require much longer time for replication to transfer the entire contents...

I know rsync can handle sparse files correctly, when called with suitable parameters. Is there any way to get the version used on the ReadyNAS to do this?
