Second NAS buying advice - for remote backup - advice on suitability.

Have been using a RN314 as a file server for a small home based business and I keep all of my working files there. I have 4x6TB disks installed using X-Raid - default settings.

Every night resync saves the data to two more USB attached external drives.

Now I want to get an offline backup solution and am thinking I'd get a second 314 (simply because I know it works and know how to use it) and resync the data over the internet - I'd begin with two disks and upgrade later as required.

The initial resync will be about 6-7TB data and I estimate that I will produce maximum of around 100GB data per month, likely to be around 60GB.

Do you think the 314 is a good option for this purpose? My thinking on cloud based storage is that it would take a long time to download the files should I need to get things back up and running after a disaster.

Would I use RAID on the new NAS too or is that overkill?

Could I cheap out on the disks for this one? I am currently using WD Red Pro.

Can I do the first resync of the data locally and then move the NAS offsite and use Resync over SSL to pick up where it left off without it thinking it needs to start from scratch?

If I've done a big photoshoot and have a particularly large amount of data to transfer which would be in addition to my estaminated data growth - can I go to the offsite NAS with my laptop - and manually copy the files without it stuffing up the resync?

Note: my networking knowledge is limited to what I've learnt through setting up my home network, and I don't really understand how the resync works and the do's and don't. When it works I tend to leave it alone. I will need to figure out how to get the resync over SSL setup, and prob need to learn about opening ports on my Edgerouter Lite.

You'd probably find it hard to get a RN314 now. You may prefer to have a look at the RN424 from our new RN420 series. The OS is the same, but the hardware is newer.

Recovery time is an important factor with remote backups and one that is often overlooked. A cloud backp can work well for incremental backups but if you need to restore the lot in a hurry that could be problematic. Also if the Cloud provider goes bust or has a major outage at an inconvenient time where does that leave you?

I would use RAID on the backup NAS too.

It's up to you what you feel comfortable with.

Yes you can do the first backup with both units at the same site. This is recommended.

I'm not sure if that would work. It may still send the new files when the backup job is next run.

It's Rsync over SSH (not Resync over SSL). We have a guide: Setting up a Backup Job with Rsync over SSH

If you go with an RN424, then I suggest making it the main NAS, and using the RN314 as the backup.  You'd move your RN314 disks to the RN424 (both NAS powered down, and preserving the slot order).  Then power up.

After that install the new drives into the RN314, and do the initial rsync backup on site.

You can use WD Reds on the backup NAS, but I don't recommend going to desktop drives.

It's not overkill, but if cost is an issue you could go with with JBOD (one volume per disk).

Without RAID, then when a disk in the backup NAS fails, you'll need to do a full backup to the replacement drive - which might max out your internet connection for a while.
