Hi Michael_Oz,
What do you mean by type selection on share to share backups? I cannot think of any share type that would be an option aside from the shares that you can select in the backup job menu. I believe that new and updated files are qualified for incremental backups and the ones untouched will no longer be part of it. With regard to your proposed backup job, I suppose it's not offsite and it can be done through multiple backup jobs on the same day but different time.

omicron_persei8 yes, thanks, this is related to my bigger issue, which, pending full size tests finishing, seems to be working with USB ports.
BrianL2, this is asking how, technically, does the backup handle incremental backups.
Doing backups to two alternate USB HDDs did not work, and gets the helpful message 'destination cannot be accessed.'
This was two jobs, same settings except HDD number, the job settings:
Source: Local, Type: Share, Name:<name>;
Dest:Local, Type :Share, Name: USB_HDD_n;
Options: Schedule Full Backup:First (which changed in the logs to 'Backup Job Type: Incremental' after the first run of each job)
The first couple of backups, alternating, work, but once an incremental has run, the next job with a different HDD_n gets the above error.
I had assumed incremental would check timestamps of souce/dest. and just copy files which have changed.
But the error means it is checking for something that is missing on the alternate HDD.
To me it could be,
a. It keeps the HDD_n used (perhaps stored in the source somewhere) and is just checking (why),
b. There is some file etc with the timestamp of last backup, which is different on the two HDDs
c. Something else and/or some bug.
That was the basis of the query, 'What method does it use to determine which files qualify for incremental backup?'
Since then, I also tried Dest:Remote, Protocol: Windows/NAS (Timestamp), with Host as the local NAS.
It also gets the same error after the first couple of backups.
Again, I had assumed '...(Timestamps)', would do what it says.
So, either;
- there are some internal checks the backups are doing, which would be good to know so backups strategies can be developed;
- it is using some non timestamp mechanism to do incremental backups, which would be good to know so backups strategies can be developed;
- there is a bug preventing straight forward incremental backups.
The question could be paraphrases as, given that Dest: USB/eSATA Ports, works as expected, what is the difference to Share based that is causing the error.
Now you could say, hey it works using USB Ports - so what's your problem? OK, but I think people need to know how to design backups and the constraints (protections?) that the system imposes.
It would have been a lot easier if I did not need to trial & error my design.
