There are some performance issues on 4.1.8, I believe.
Does your router do gigabit? I'm guessing the NIC in your PC is probably 100 megabit.
You could try changing the ethernet cable.
There is a new beta firmware available: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222
If still same problem with direct-connection (helps isolate cause is of issue) then you could check to see if downgrading to 4.1.7 or updating to that beta helps.
