Small Business NAS - Protecting on an open network?

Hello,

I recently set up a NAS for a client that leases out offices in a commercial complex and use their network for internet. I had set up a ReadyNas on that network using a D-Link router(was there before I came in) as an access point. Therefore, I could regulate who was on the network and could access the NAS.

Since then, the D-Link router went ka-put, smoked up and everything. So my client no longer wants a router/access point in the mix. I explained the benefits, but it is true that it's just another device that could go bad when dealing with sensitive important data.

TLDR: So I currently have their hard drive connected to the office network along with their computers. In what method could I use to authenticate users or password protect the drive on this now open network?

Thank you all in advance.

  • I would recommend a firewall between the office and the "open" complex network. That would remove a lot of security threats.

Of course you can setup access control lists for all the shares on the ReadyNAS. Make sure anonymous access/everyone access is not checked. The user manuals will describe how to setup User Permissions. Go to support.netgear.com and enter the ReadyNAS model deployed to download the correct manual.
