Squeezebox Media Server and AirPlay?

I have a somewhat related question. I use my Readynas NVX as a file server in the basement. Currently I use Winamp on my PC laptop to play back files from the NAS, which I then stream with Airfoil from the PC to my Yamaha network receiver, using the Airplay protocol. Works fine, and sometimes I stream Spotify the same way to the receiver.
Anyhow, I have this idea that I would prefer if could stream directly from the NAS to the Yamaha, using the PC only to access the streaming app on the NAS in order to create playlists or enqueue mp3 files. It's not such a big change versus what I am doing today, but I find my current setup a bit unnecessarily complicated in regards that the PC needs to run while I am listening to music. Not sure I have explained this accurately...
When I last checked there were some technical constraints prohibiting streaming directly from the NAS to the receiver in the Airplay protocol. Even if there was a solution, the change would only make sense if there was a good UI allowing me to access the streaming app on the NAS from the PC, tablet and/or mobile phone. I know that I can play back the mp3 files on the NAS directly from the receiver, but the UI is pretty crappy as I cannot add single files or folders to a playlist, so I am limited to playing single files, single folders or pre-set playlists.
Anyone an idea how this could be solved?
