Streaming iTunes - Home Media

I have 3 ReadyNAS NVs. @ are NV+(8TB) the other is NV(4TB). All seems to be working correctly but I have 2 questions concerning settings in Frontview. I am running firmware version 4.1.10 on all three boxes.

1. Security->Accounts: 2 of the 3 ReadyNAS NVs (one NV and one NV+) have the UID set as 1000 for backup and 1002 for media, The last (NV+) has 1001 for backup and 1003 for media. Should they all be the same? I have no idea what UID is.

2. Services->Streaming Services: On 2 of the ReadyNAS NVs (NV and 1 NV+, opposite of item 1 above) show Home Media Streaming Server as an option and it is selected, The other NV+ doesn't have it as a selection. First, is that an add-in or option that I need to upload for the 3rd box? And second, since I run iTunes on a networked (W7 Home Prof)to 2 AppleTVs on my network, would I be better off not selecting this option and selecting iTunes Streaming Server instead since all music and movies are stored on and streamed from one ReadyNAS NV+. Photos are on a local shared drive.

I have just installed the AppleTVs and haven't really tried to do much. So I cannot say that the video is streaming properly. The music has been used for a long time with Sonos zone players on the network and they seem to work fine.

I've searched the forum but can't seem to find an answer to these questions. Any help/links will be appreciated.

    1. UID is the User ID. If backing up from one NAS to another it is best to have the same UID and GIDs so that ownership can be preserved.

    2. I think that "Home Media Streaming Server" is an EOL feature. The iTunes Streaming Server on the ReadyNAS will stream to iTunes on your PC not to the AppleTV. So you're best to continue to use iTunes on your PC.
  • Thank you for your speedy reply. I will make all of the UIDs and GIDs the same.

I will turn on iTunes Streaming server and uncheck the Home Media Streaming server. iTunes runs on one PC on the network and that has to run to stream to the AppleTVs.
