Well you can stream music to your PC using the iTunes Server or video to DLNA clients using ReadyDLNA.
Streaming to the iPad would likely involve needing to remux (convert from one format to another on the fly) audio or transcode (convert in the fly) video. At least for some of your media. It is even more likely to be needed when you are away from home as video is converted to a quality that can be uploaded over your internet connection.
For streaming to an iPad I would recommend at least a NAS with an Intel CPU (e.g. the RN314). If you want to stream very high quality video (e.g. 1080p video) to an iPad you should look to getting a RN516 or making lower quality copies of the videos for streaming to the iPad.
