Streaming options NV+ v1?
Hi!
I'm new to readynas after I got the unit called readynas nv+ v1 (figured out since it is the silver chassi).
I've setup the machine and it's seems to work at least when i'm connected with my laptop or iphone in my own network. I've also managed to install transmission for bittorrent and downloaded a file through. I can browse my share and it's folders in the RNRemote Iphone APP however when watchin a movie it seems that the movie will be downloaded to my phone. Instead I would like to stream the movie from the nas to my iphone, ipad, mac or windows pc and from there maybe airplay it to Appletv 3 (non jailbroken).
I've read about something called airvideo server and airvideo iphone app but unfortunetaly it seems that the air video is not supported by nv+ v1 cpu.
I've also seen plex but that seems to only be supported by x86 cput.
What alternatives do I have for streaming (should support subtitles) from this NAS to my devices? What addons can I install and what Iphone/Ipad, mac or windows apps can I download? It would be great if the streaming server software could decode the movie format on the fly to work on the devices (maybe this is called transcoding or?). Also I would like to be able to do the streaming when I'm not connected to my NAS network directly.
Apreciate any help
Best regards.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIs is the wrong NAS for e streaming you want.
You would need to mount a share on your PC/Mac and stream the media using software on your PC/Mac
Either that or get a new NAS with a more powerful CPU. - tomas1981AspirantSo you basically say I will not be able to stream (on the fly) from NAS to an Iphone/Ipad app? What are the streaming services in the setup used for then?
RNRemote app does it download the movie directly to the iphone? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell you can stream music to your PC using the iTunes Server or video to DLNA clients using ReadyDLNA.
Streaming to the iPad would likely involve needing to remux (convert from one format to another on the fly) audio or transcode (convert in the fly) video. At least for some of your media. It is even more likely to be needed when you are away from home as video is converted to a quality that can be uploaded over your internet connection.
For streaming to an iPad I would recommend at least a NAS with an Intel CPU (e.g. the RN314). If you want to stream very high quality video (e.g. 1080p video) to an iPad you should look to getting a RN516 or making lower quality copies of the videos for streaming to the iPad. - tomas1981AspirantI don't have so high demand on quality (eq 1080p and so on). How does ReadDLNA work on iphone? Is it a sort of "streaming". I saw that there is an iphone app what is the different between readydlna and rnremote? Also does my nas nv+ v1 support readDLNA?
As you see i'm a newbee when it comes to nas and it's services ;) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDLNA clients would be primarily for streaming to TVs with DLNA and some other media players. I think there is a ReadyDLNA app for iOS.
Your NAS has ReadyDLNA. It can only stream video as it is. If it is in the wrong format or the wrong quality for your client device it won't be able to stream.
Personally I think a RN314 running Plex Media Server would be the way to go for you. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserSubtitles will be a problem I think.
ReadyDLNA is available on the iPad/iPhone, and in fact it will render via airplay to an apple TV v3. You are pushing the media over wifi twice when you use it that way. I'm not a big fan of the user interface, but if you don't have too much media it is workable.
As mdgm points out, you will only be able to play media that you could play on the iPhone natively (e.g., MP4 videos, but not MKV or AVI). Basically, if it doesn't play when you download it to the phone, it won't play over DLNA. Plex would overcome that.
You can try the Plex media server on your Mac or Windows PC - probably best to experiment with it there first. If you like it, you can actually leave it there (accessing the media library on your ReadyNAS), but of course you could only stream stuff when the PC was running. Or get a RN314 if you need to stream w/o the PC.
Another option for iDevice is to purchase AVplayerHD, which will play most video formats. If you enable FTP on your ReadyNAS, it can access them directly off the NAS (streaming, no download required). AVplayerHD doesn't use DLNA. Airplay is possible on an iPad (by mirroring the display), though performance is not the best. - tomas1981AspirantThanks for the replies. As I see it there are three options:
1. Use DLNA with the movie as in the original format.
2. Use AVplayerHD that will through FTP (already activated in my NAS) stream the movie on many formats
3. Change NAS machine hehe
This means that it might work as long as I can leave without subtitles and as long as the movie is in correct format. I will test plex on my computer and see how it will work the only problem with that is that I will need to have my computer up and running all the time hmm - tomas1981AspirantBfore buying AVPlayer have you tested it with ftp? Does it really stream from the ftp or does it download the file from ftp to i-device before playback?

First I choose "wifi transfer"
Then "FTP Client"
You need to enter the FTP stuff (IP address or name, port if non-standard, any username password needed).
It does remember recent connections.
Then browse to the folder, and select the media.
It begins playing in a few seconds, it is definitely not downloading the file.
FTP is the only remote access method it does.
It is meant for video, but it will play individual songs also (no playlist support or queueing). - tomas1981AspirantI downloaded AVPlayerHD on Ipad and OPlayer Lite on iphone. FTP Stream with subtitles works great on both devices except when trying to airplay to AppleTV3.
From Oplayer (Iphone) airplay will only show a music note and audio on TV no video. The video will still be shown on iphone.
From AVPlayerHD nothing happens on AppleTV3 when trying to airplay only audio appears on tv. Video and subtitles is still only shown on ipad.
Airplaying from the built in ipad/iphone video seems to work.
I tried mirroring the ipad with airplay and played the movie but the picture was hacking and not as smooth as when running witout mirroring.
Is there a way to get AVPlayer to do airplay with subtitles to Apple TV 3?
Have apple put limitation that only the video app that comes with iphone/ipad can do airplay?
Thanks for all answers.
