Streaming options NV+ v1?
Hi!
I'm new to readynas after I got the unit called readynas nv+ v1 (figured out since it is the silver chassi).
I've setup the machine and it's seems to work at least when i'm connected with my laptop or iphone in my own network. I've also managed to install transmission for bittorrent and downloaded a file through. I can browse my share and it's folders in the RNRemote Iphone APP however when watchin a movie it seems that the movie will be downloaded to my phone. Instead I would like to stream the movie from the nas to my iphone, ipad, mac or windows pc and from there maybe airplay it to Appletv 3 (non jailbroken).
I've read about something called airvideo server and airvideo iphone app but unfortunetaly it seems that the air video is not supported by nv+ v1 cpu.
I've also seen plex but that seems to only be supported by x86 cput.
What alternatives do I have for streaming (should support subtitles) from this NAS to my devices? What addons can I install and what Iphone/Ipad, mac or windows apps can I download? It would be great if the streaming server software could decode the movie format on the fly to work on the devices (maybe this is called transcoding or?). Also I would like to be able to do the streaming when I'm not connected to my NAS network directly.
Apreciate any help
Best regards.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI thought I had done airplay with avplayerHD, but perhaps I did mirroring. I'll try again and report back.
ReadDLNA can airplay video w/o mirroring, so it can be done. - tomas1981AspirantCan ReadyDLNA handle subtitles? When I tried it didn't seemed to handle subtitles.

I think it doesn't.tomas1981 wrote: Can ReadyDLNA handle subtitles? When I tried it didn't seemed to handle subtitles. - tomas1981AspirantThis is a bit frustrating but I suppose this is all due to airplay protocol not be open enough for developers. This means that the only way is to do airplay from native video player without subtitles OR watch it in the iDevice with subtitles.
Is there a way to embedd the subtitle into the video on the fly while streaming from ftp and then play the new version of the video (with subtitle embedded) in the iphone native video app? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserFTP streaming copies the entire file. If you have subtitles embedded in the file, they are available for the player to display.
Some players also look for a sub with the same name as the media file, and will render them. This is possible with FTP.
I haven't checked on whether AVPlayerHD supports subtitles (I generally don't need them).
I don't understand the connection to the airplay protocol, or which player you are thinking is the native one. Apple's built-in video player doesn't do FTP or DLNA, and it only plays files that Apple lets it play (e.g., mostly managed via iTunes). - StephenBGuru - Experienced User-Airplay (without mirroring) is temperamental with AVPlayerHD. Usually you get audio-only, sometimes you get a failure to play.
-It will play back subtitles, the second icon from the top on the left controls them. There are a variety of subtitle formats (not to mention the text encoding) - I am not sure which set it handles correctly.
-taking my own advice, I have installed plex on a PC and am starting to play with it now. I haven't installed their players at this point, it is presently loading up its database. - tomas1981AspirantWith the native player I mean the built in video player in iphone. When using the built in player you can do airplay with no problem BUT when doing airplay from another player for instance AVPlayer you will only get sound on the tv. Playing a video with seperate subtitle file I managed to find player handling that through ftp stream and to view it on the tv the only option was doing mirroring which is not so smooth.

You can airplay from other apps. For instance, ReadyDLNA. Though probably it is using the built-in player for playback.tomas1981 wrote: With the native player I mean the built in video player in iphone. As I reported earlier, airplay from AVplayerHD does have issues. Usually you get audio-only, but sometimes it tries to play video and totally fails (with an error message displayed on the apple TV.) You could report this to the app developer, it looks like a bug to me. - tomas1981AspirantThe problem is that I've tried many player apps (more than 10) like oplayer, avplayerhd, goodplayer etc etc and they all cannot stream video trhrough airplay only audio. I thought it might be a restriction from apple regarding airplay but not sure.

It is always challenging in the land of iDevices when you want to go beyond what Apple thinks you should do :wink:tomas1981 wrote: The problem is that I've tried many player apps (more than 10) like oplayer, avplayerhd, goodplayer etc etc and they all cannot stream video trhrough airplay only audio.
