There is a procedure for migrating the RN100 disks to the RN300 system, but not the reverse.
There's another poster asking about this also (https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Hardware-Compatibility/Moving-314-disks-to-104-Compatibility/m-p/1014827#M13457). It might be a candidate for the ideas exchange.

Ok how about this, if I had 2 x NAS312 Drives 2 Bay's... one was running all the time with a backup USB for safe measure, then the other was empty... if one went down for whatever reason (and wasn't the drives of course) could I simply switch both drives into the other NAS and boot up and use as normal?

Yes. Though its best to keep the firmware in both units matched. The backup NAS will attempt to reinstall the firmware if the version in its flash is different from what's on the disks.
