So I took this up with Netgear, and so far all they've suggested is I re-install the firmware on the unit. I've read too many people having issues after re-installing firmware and to add to this, Netgear will give me no assurance that this will do anything at all - i.e. they're just telling me to effectively turn it off and back on again, in IT Crowd terms :)
If anyone would like to try a firmware reinstall to see if it makes a difference, I'd love to hear about it. Until they actually tell me they've replicated and this would solve the issue, I'm no further along.
