Transferring drives from 316 to 516
Hi I currently have a 316 with 6x 4Tb HDDs which I installed myself. I am away from home at the moment but I think I set it up with FlexRaid and I am sure I set it up so that it could survive 2 d...
That should work. I tis best to keep the disk order the same.
If you have a scratch disk (must not be from the array) lying around you may wish to use that to update the firmware on the 516 to match what is on the 316, then power down both units, remove the scratch disk and move the disks across then power on.If your data is important to you then you may wish to consider getting new disks for the RN516, using backup jobs to copy the data across then reversing the order of the backup jobs to backup your important data to the RN316.
Redundant RAID levels are great and disk failures are one of the most likely problems to run into, but there are other problems which RAID will not protect you against e.g. accidental file deletion, too many disk failures, fire, flood, theft etc.

Thanks for the help. With buying a 516, I can't afford to buy new drives for it as well but I do have a spare 3Tb HDD I could use as a scratch disk as you suggest. I already have the existing drives numbered so I can be sure to replace them in the same order.
