Turning on iSCSI after data on ReadyNAS4200
So I have a readyNAS 4200 that I have been using for a year or two. I have a LOT of data on it right now and I would like to try turning on iSCSI. So my question is "Can I turn on iSCSI without loosing all my data?"
At this point I am trying to make use of the ReadyNAS as a backup target and I would like to get more performance out of it then using the CIFS protocol.

- If you enable iSCSI you can create targets using free space available on your data volume. Your data will remain intact.
- Thank you very much. It is just a little nerve wracking to make a change like that on the system with all the data sitting there.
- When you are using the ISCSI it will allocate the space and view it as one big file so whatever you make the size of it, it will take that from the volume.

- Now if you wanted to copy your data across to the iSCSI target you would need to copy the data across your network from the CIFS share to the mounted iSCSI target on your PC (a Windows Server perhaps?). You could share the data from that PC across your network.
- Nope, no need to move the files :) all that I need is a good target for some Veeam backups. I am thinking that iSCSI would be quicker and better then the CIFS target that I am currently using. I am hoping for some better performance :)

My experience (and official performance numbers back this up) is that iSCSI is, like, 20-30% slower than CIFS. How did it go?- I have not had the chance to move the files around at this point. We have not upgraded the SAN yet as a result we don't have space to move all the files over. Also there are a few other projects that need to happen before I can really play with the NAS and see how we can get things working better.
