The files are being moved by cut and paste...by a user that has read/write priv for the share. the files are being moved within that share to another folder in that same share. after the successful move, the files cannot be accessed by the user or other users. resetting the permissions instantly corrects this issue. why does this occur? it seems as though the permissions are not being set, though ive had users report that sometimes if they wait a while and try again the files work. Any ideas as to what would cause this behavior?
What are the permissions on these files before and after the cut and paste? I'm surprised the user who moved the files would not be able to delete them.
Before the move, permissions are read and write for a few specific users, read only for everyone else...after, the files cannot be opened by anyone(acessed denied message) or are read-only, until resetting permissions for the share, at which point all permissions work correctly.

also ive tried checking and unchecking the "set permissions automatically" for new files. what is the advantage/disadvantage of this? if you are not setting the permissions automatically, what permissions will the file receive? the permissions of the parent? Is this used to set permissions different than those of the parent?
The feature allows you to set the default permissions for new files and folders, the advantages and disadvantages are really up to your setup and needs. If this is not set, the default permissions should be read/write for the owner of the file, read-only for everyone else.
understood, what i want to happen is for the files to match the share they are in, so then i would check this box, correct?
