Unable to horizontally expand RAID-5 on 2120

Have recently replace an agining ReadyNAS NV+ with a new 2120.

As my previous NAS was failing I installed a 4TB WD Red into my PC (windows 10) as a temp backup area and copied the NAS data on to this.

For the 2120 I have inatlled 3 x 4TB WD red (same as purchased for backup as above).  This is reporting as RAID 5 using X-Raid and have copied the above data on to this (all finished syncing and idle).  Now I wish to install the remaining 4TB drive that I used as a backup to the new ReadyNAS horizontally expaning the volume.  I have read that as the drive had data on it that it needs to be formatted before it can be used in the NAS.  I also noted that there is a Format option in the ReadyNAS volume configuration.

When I installed the drive it told me I couldn't use it (as expected), I then formatted using the facility within the NAS and was then told the drive mounted and is online.  All good and as expected however it still will not expand the current RAID 5.  I have tried unplugging and re-inserting, I have tried powering down the NAS with the drive out, installing the drive and powering on, I have tried inalling back in my PC to make sure it is indeed reformatted but all to no avail.

I can't help but this that it's something to do with the fact the drive had been used before but if this is the case I can't see what else I should do to wipe it correctly.

Any suggestions welcome!

Sometimes the system will decide to make the drive a spare (for no obvious reason).  I don't think that's related to the formatting step.

You could download the logs and look in mdstat.log, that should tell you if that happened in your case.

If you purchased new, you are likely still within the phone-support window for your NAS.  You might try contacting support via my.netgear.com.  If it is marked as spare, they should be able to trigger the expansion remotely.

Many thanks for the response.  I'll take a look.  Assume it will be obvious if marked as spare?!

It is pretty obvious, though there is a lot of stuff in that log.  There are lines like  Spare Devices : 0 for each RAID partition.
