Unbricking a ReadyNAS 102

I have a self inflicted issue for which I would greatly appreciate advice on salvaging a ReadyNAS 102.

Long story short it had firmware 6.1.8 and I installed 6.9.3 without first reading the firmware notes that tiered updates must be performed from 6.1.8 to 6.3.5 to 6.5.2, and then to 6.9.3.  After the attempted upgrade the unit no longer boots, I get solid blue on the power and activity LED's but no network traffic, it doesn't attempt to pull a DHCP address and RAIDar doesn't see it.

I have attempted numerous recover methods including the boot menu w/Factory Defaults (it doesn't seem to attempt anything) and a USB Boot Drive (LED's immediately begin blinking, doesn't seem to try to boot from USB).  I also tried swapping in a clean hard drive in hopes it would re-initialize from scratch (does nothing).

The unit has no data of importance.  It was a used spare that I was going to repurpose.  If there are any suggestions on recovery I would greatly appreciate them.  Thank you.

  • Hi Grill-n-Chill,

Have you also tried using another USB drive when doing the USB boot recovery?

Does Raidar detect the NAS if there are no disks inserted or if it is in Tech Support mode?

Thanks for your suggestions.  I have just tried Tech Support Mode as well as without any disks.  Neither provides any improvement.  I should also note that the device is always locked shortly after powering on (Power LED on, button does nothing pressing or holding it, must pull the power cord to shut off).

I have not tried a different USB drive, I will try to find another suitable one but it seems the problem is deeper.  Is there a way to do some sort of deeper level firmware reset or recovery?

      Thank you.

A different flash drive worked.  I had to dig around to find a crusty old 8 gig Sandisk and it worked fine where the 16 gig Crucial did not.  The unit is functional again!  Thank you.
