Unprotected \ lifesupp! \ failed disk test \ wtf?
Hi all!
I've got a good one here. I'm running a ReadyNAS Pro 6 Bay (RAIDiator v 4.2.31) with 6 2TB WD disks (X-RAID2) that are on hardware compatability list. I've had this beast for about 9 years and I've only had to replace one disk during that time.
Here's the problem that I've been trying to work through for the last 6 weeks:
Disk 5 failed so I replaced it with a fresh, identical disk. The resync fails then I get an alert indicating that drive 4 is now dead. I then replace that one with another fresh, identical drive. When it boots up again, the volume is not accessible. I understand why - because drive 5 never fully rebuilt itself.
I've put all the original disks back in and now it's showing me that both 4 & 5 are dead...BUT...drive 5 shows up as an available drive outside of the RAID configuration.
This all very confusing to me. Somehow, I am able to access the volume with 2 reportedly dead drives, one of which is outside of the config. I'm actively transfering data to another medium while I still can. Next step for me is to get into the boot menu and try a factory restore on the firmware unless you guys have any other ideas?

It's pretty clear the NAS is quite confused on the volume status. Obviously make sure your backup is up to date while you still have access to the data (which might not last).
A factory reset is the best approach, you could convert to OS 6 while you are at it.

I didn't think OS 6 would run on older hardware. Am I wrong there?

OS 6 will run on your Pro 6, here is how to do it:-
- BACKUP all your data as it will be overwritten
- Download and run in OS 4 http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin this will check and update your Bios if necessary
- Upload it using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
- Download PREP4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin
- Upload it using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update, but do not reboot afterwards (avoids the need to do manual factory resets)
- Download R4toR6_6.9.5.bin
- Upload it using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
- After you upload the addon/firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default.
