Right, i got mine working and this is how for anyone who does a search for this error
On the following link right click and press save as, change it from txt to all files and rename it ca-bundle.crt then save
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/owncloud/core/stable8.1/config/ca-bundle.crt
go into your readynas, make sure you have selected to view hidden files
then go to data/.apps/owncloud/web/config/
copy the ca-bundle.crt file into this folder
go back into the website of your owncloud

Hello stevey198321,
How do you try to update? Are you uploading manually? I am check on our own unit and the current version available for ReadyNAS OS6 is 6.0.0.
You can only use the one that is available from the Available Apps, if you want to update it you may need for it to be available from the apps. Even if newer version of OwnCloud is available from OwnCloud site, you may need to wait for to be available from the ReadyNAS Apps.

I'm trying to upgrade as well. Version 6.0.0 dates back from December 2013. That's almost 2 years old! (Besides that; it's a .0.0 release, so upgrading seems like a good thing to do security wise anyways)
Since there is no current package available from the Apps page on my ReadyNAS (...) I tried the 'Updater' from within the Admin interface of Owncloud.
I just get an 'Update failed' message.
In the logs (/data/Owncloud/owncloud.log) I see:
{"app":"core","message":"isWebDAVWorking: NO - Reason: [CURL] Error while making request: SSL: certificate subject name '[SOME LOCAL NAME]' does not match target host name '[MY FQDN]' (error code: 51) (Sabre_DAV_Exception)","level":2
Obviously 'SOME LOCAL NAME' and 'MY FQDN' are values applicable to my system. :-)
So, somehow this is a certificate issue.
Don't know how to fix the name in my local certificate...

I 'resolved' these issues by following instructions found on the owncloud forum. However, I still get warnings and errors:
{"app":"updater","message":"Unable to move \/apps\/owncloud\/web\/3rdparty\/Archive to \/apps\/owncloud\/web\/data\/updater_backup\/tmp\/3rdparty\/Archive","level":3,"time":"2015-11-11T09:49:49+00:00"}
Searching for that specific error gave me exactly 1 (one) hit. It's about upgrading from 6.0.0 to 6.0.2 and is found over here.
Figuring out how to patch this now.
Too bad this isn't decently packaged by Netgear.

Thanks Jasper, i still haven't fixed mine, to be honest i haven't had time to play around with it. But thanks for the pointers you have given
