If I recall correctly my NAS firmware is 4.2.5 (I don't have access right now). I guess the update process is the same no matter the current version.
From 4.2.5 (not to be confused with 4.2.15) you can update direct to 4.2.19 and this will be indicated via System > Update > Remote. 4.2.5 (http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_5_Notes) was released back in May 2009. It's very old firmware.

I have gone through the link you provided very fast and it seems to me that your recommendation it to store all the data in a external drive. However, I don't have enough space to keep all these data.
Yes my recommendation is that you should backup important data primarily stored on the ReadyNAS. Data stored on a single device is not backed up.

Is it possible that updating to 4.2.19 leaves my data intact?
Yes it does, however it is recommended to ensure that your backup is up to date before any firmware update.
