Upgrading R.N. 516
https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Hardware-Compatibility/How-to-Upgrade-the-CPU-and-RAM-in-a-ReadyNAS-516/td-p/1140753
This article describes upgrading a CPU and RAM on a 516 . He elected to upgrade RAM to 16 gigs plus the CPU . I'm in a similar boat to him I suspect I make a lot of use of plex. Playing my video collection using on the fly transcoding. Would my user experience benefit from either or both of these upgrades ? If I upgrade the CPU do I need to upgrade the RAM at the same time ?
If you have some spare parts lying around, it is better to just build a Plex box and use your NAS just for storage. I'm in the process of reprovisioning my HTPC from WMC to a Plex system. Right now, I'm actually running both on it until I'm comfortable that the Plex DVR system is going to get it done. It is a cheaper solution that gives you a lot more flexibility in the long run.

With transcoding the CPU is the main thing.
Upgrading the CPU and RAM are unsupported upgrades (done at own risk) and don't need to be done at the same time.
Our new RN626X and RN628X have a quad-core CPU installed and 8GB DDR4 ECC RAM.
So one option would be to get a new ReadyNAS and use your old one to backup the new one.

- So one option is I spend $400-500 to upgrade the CPU. The other is to spend $3000 for new diskless machine Plus the cost of six new placement drives ? This is for a personal media server.
is this the CPU upgrade recommended if I choose to go down that path

Well you can decide what suits you.
We don't support replacing the CPU (it's possible to do it, but it is a difficult procedure), so if you understand the risks then you may wish to go for it.
