VERY Slow and Unreliable transfering files between Mac and NAS box
I have 4 ReadyNAS 104's, all of them are showing the same problems, I can access them fine from Windows based systems over the 1Gb backbone that we have installed here, so in theory no bottle necks! ...

More or less resolved. Using a back up to move data around seems reliable and fast. So I have my data set up now where it needs to be on both RNs and a second back up to a USB SSD drive. What I origianlly had trouble with was dragging and dropping from the ReadyCLOUD application or directly from my iMac using Finder. It seems I have a bit to learn about this. I'll post back in a new thread if I continue to have issues.

Firmware 6.4.2 (reported by RAIDar), 6.2.5 (reported within the admin panel)
That's weird.
Perhaps try upgrading one to 6.6.x and then do a factory reset/restore the data.
I did a factory reset on my RN102 last May (first time since launch) and saw a big performance boost.
Also, make sure antivirus and IPv6 are both turned off.

I have tried to update but it does not mention that there is an update available, I would try manually but the problem with these ReadyNAS 104 units is that Neatgear does not seem to recognise the 104 and has another number for them, so findingn the right update manually can be a tad worrying...

Not sure what you mean by that, the web pages definitely spell out which release is for the RN104. For instance here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/31221

Do you use static IP addresses? If so, check that the DNS servers are configured properly on the NAS network page.

Do you think it would be faster if I just connected the 2 ready nas with a USB cable?

That won't work at all. The USB ports can't be used that way.
FWIW, your problem sounds different from the main one on this thread. I suspect you don't have the inconsistent firmware reports, and you likely are running something newer than 6.4.2.
