Volume Size and New HDD
I expand my ReadyNAS 316 as needed. Currently Windows 7. Firmware 6.2.2.
It seems easiest to have left it on X-RAID2 as a single volume. Added new 4th 4TB HDD WD RED as "hot". All 4 disks are green. However Volume has not expanded horizontally although "Volumes" shows all 4 disks to be Green dots. Readings are - Single Volume Data 6.55TB: Free 612.88GB. Type RAID 5 which I think indicates that the 4th disk has not changed the Volume size and is not recognised in the volume - although see below.
I have changed to Flex-Raid and back to X-RAID2 as single volume. Also tried Rebooting but has had no effect on reported volume size. The new disk was left for a number of days in the hope that slow incorporation was taking place but no change occurred.
Hot removal of new disk gives Message that Volume Is Degraded etc. Replacement of this disk indicates "Rebuilding In Process" which all appears satisfactory but will presumably take a log time.
At no stage have I been offered the chance to add a new volume. Highlighting the single volume does not bring up any opportunity to assess the status of this one volume - presumably one can only do this if there are more than one volume? I have not been aware of any other options being offered.
I have searched these Forums and suspect that I have breached the maximum allowed for a single volume size for X-RAID2 although this is not clearly stated anywhere and, certainly, is not hinted at in the manual. With 4+ TB drives now common NETGEAR may need to upgrade the manual / software?
My questions are what should I have done to expand the size and what can I do now? I had intended to buy a 6TB drive but they are a lot more expensive per TB in Australia!
Many thanks in anticipation of some much needed help.....

- vandermerweMasterThe volume expansion limits only apply to earlier OS , not OS6.
When the nas says volume rebuilding, do you see a progress indicator on the volume tab?
Did you test the disk using wd lifeguard, before inserting it? - jdo1AspirantThanks Vandermerwe.
The disk was new so I assumed it would be okay and it was green after insertion!
Volume is rebuilding okay - currently up to 21%.
Thanks - jdo1AspirantProblem now solved. Thanks.
Taking out the newly added last 4TB drive and putting it back in again led to Rebuilding as above. Potential trap was that the displayed Data and Free sizes remained at level of only 3 (x4TB) disks until rebuilding finished (after 36 hours!) but this time it said that it was rebuilding and 4th disk light was not green. Now completed figures are Data 6.55TB: Free 4.23TB: Type RAID5: so all is okay. Presumably "proper" rebuilding did not occur on first insertion of the 4th disk although mystery why it should have showed as green. Solution presumably is therefore - if addition of extra drive does not give result expected (remembering limitation that disk size should be same or larger than what is already there) - remove new disk and put back in to encourage a new forced rebuild.
Thanks.
