I've bought new WDTV for my father. There is a setting to download and update your metadata. Turn off that sh*t. It took over an hour for WD to scan 1TB drive and I coudn't stop this process.
Besides that you could try to set manually speed and duplex on the port where your WD is connected instead of auto negotiation.
