Which CPUs work in an RN516?

In addition to the Xeon E3-1265L V2, do we know of any other CPUs that are known to work in the 516?

  • Since nobody has answered with any that do, I'll comment:

It's likely others in the Ivy Bridge family will work, including some 8-core ones, particularly any that came out before or concurrently with the E3-1265L V2.  But most of them have a TDP of way more, so you'd need to find a way to cool it; which means active cooling in place of the passive cooling currently in the unit.  ./etc/sensors.d/system.conf implies that there is a potential for another fan, but I have no idea whether or not the necessary parts are actually installed.  And there isn't a lot of space to work with.

Back when most were doing upgrades, those processors were a bit pricy to buy just to find out if one would work.

If you want to speed up your NAS beyond the E3-1265L V2, a 10GB NIC will give you the most bang for the buck.  I've done it using an Intel X520-DA2 with a low profile bracket and I'm sure one in the X540 series will also work.  An X550 might also work, but I've never used one in a ReadyNAS.  I have used genuine Intel and Supermicro versions of those cards in ReadyNAS running OS6, so I know they work.  I don't know about others (like Dell).  I used a 20cm ribbon-cable PCIE X8 extender, though a bit more length would have made it a bit easier.

Thanks - this is what I assumed the situation would be having looked at the range and the TDPs, but was hoping others had tried the ones at around 69w and could say if they worked and cooled OK.

The 1265L v2 (45w) is actually lower TDP than the stock CPU (i3-3220 @ 55w), so on assumption that the stock setup has some cooling headroom left, the 69w options MIGHT be doable.

But they aren't significantly cheaper than the 1265L v2s as to make the experiment pay for itself!

I've upgraded a ton of 516s with 1265L v2s and they are an excellent combination of power and cool running.  I was just hoping for the ability to experiment a bit like I have done with Pro6s.  I have those running X3210, X3220 and X3230 with no worries (as well as having tried a few of the 'desktop' CPU options over the years).
