Windows Sever Backup to SMB error "THe username not recognized by local computer"

I have a Server 2012 machine that's in a workgroup so no AD involved.

When I tried to create a backup schedule all goes well until I try to authenticate it says that "the User name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer"

I believe this problem can be resolved if my server was a DC and the NAS was set to authenticate using AD. But I don't want/need this

Any work around this?

Is the backup initated by the Windows server, or is the backup job running on the NAS?  Also, if the latter, is it the built-in web backup job or replicate?

I don't have Windows 12 but on for my Windows 2008 server my back up software worked when when there is a user with the same name and password on both the Windows server and on the NAS box.  You can 1) create a backup service user on the server with a password that never expires and create the same user / password on the NAS; 2) add the name and password you are using on the Windows server as a NAS box; or 3) add the name / password that you log onto the NAS with as a user on the Windows server.

Also the native Windows back up solution on my SBS2008 server wants a local drive to backup up to.  I believe a mapped drive would be accepted.

        YMMV but hope this helps.
