The network cable isn't surge-protected directly, no. The cable line coming into the house is (I have cable internet), and all of the network equipment is on power surge suppression. I think that's unlikely (but not impossible). I do get link... the lack of drive activity lights is what makes me think support may be correct, I think it should at least try to access the disk during boot. When I do a reset, I see the drive status lights come on as they should (to indicate the reset has happened).
