I have the VMB4000r3 and have two cameras in windows and they are not picking up motion through the glass windows, and when I turn the cameras to live mode it does not save the images.

The cameras detect motion via PIR (passive infra red) sensors. They cannot detect through glass. You'll need to put the cameras outside the glass.
Live mode doesn't automatically record. When you are live viewing, you'll see a button at the bottom of the live view window to enable recording of what you're viewing. It would be nice if we could set the system to automatically record when in live view
