Need help to understand AP Station List status

Hello All,

Can some explain the various results I see in the status field under Station List.

For example waht is "Associated" ?

I have read the NETGEAR 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point WG602v4 Reference Manual.

Thanks

Re: Need help to understand AP Station List status

Hmmm, that an about 15 year old product. The wording does come from the three 802.11 connection states:

  • Not authenticated or associated.
  • Authenticated but not yet associated.
  • Authenticated and associated.

A wireless client must be in authenticated and associated state before a connection to the LAN or other wireless clients can be done.

Looks like I need to brush up on my knowledge of 802.11

Re: Need help to understand AP Station List status

I had a look at 802.11 Association process explained [https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/WiFi_Basics_and_Best_Practices/802.11_Association_process_explai...] and there is a reference to "Authenticated"

However on the Netgear AP there is a status "Authorized" is that the same as Authenticated but not yet associated? OR is it Authenticated and associated?

Re: Need help to understand AP Station List status

Yes, that's a nice documentation. The association is required for doing the authentication onviously.

Netgear does use "authenticated" status information for an authenticated _and_ associated STA - up to the very current WAP models and controllers.
