WAC730 firmware 3.9.1.13 causes high CPU load, slowness

Firmware version 3.9.1.0 fixed a bug that caused sirq to get stuck at 50%, causing slow performance.  This thread documents the investigation, and the fix:  Netgear forum post

I just upgrade to the newly released 3.9.1.13 firmware and am seeing the exact same 50% sirq show up in a few hours on two of my devices.  I suspect somehow the bug has been re-added.  Fortunately I kept WAC730 device monitoring in place so I saw the issue right away.  I had not been alerted for over a year since installing 3.9.1.0.

I will revert to the older 3.9.1.0 until this is fixed.

Re: WAC730 firmware 3.9.1.13 causes high CPU load, slowness

Hi @bmomjian

We have not reverted any fix on this FW 3.9.1.13 and will not cause any high CPU utilization. We have the script which will monitor ksoftirq and it will prevent AP going for hung state. You might see ksoftirq  taking more CPU but we are handling it.

Feel free to upgrade to 3.9.1.13 and report back to us for any issues.

Thanks,

Raghu

Re: WAC730 firmware 3.9.1.13 causes high CPU load, slowness

Not sure what else I can say.  I have been monitoring that sirq is < 50% every hours for a year with 3.9.1.0, with no errors.  After upgrading to 3.9.1.13, I got two reports in several hours. How is installing 3.9.1.13 again going to help?  Do you need more testing?  Are you saying 50% sirq is now normal, but was not with 3.9.1.0?

sysirq may go above 50% but that will not cause any issue. You can continue to use 3.9.1.13 as like 3.9.1.0. You dont need to do any testing further.

Thanks,

Raghu

Re: WAC730 firmware 3.9.1.13 causes high CPU load, slowness

Are you saying it will get stuck showing 50% but that will not be a problem, or that it can go to 50% occasionally?  I am seeing it go from typical 0% to 50%, and then stay at 50%.  How is this firmware different from 3.9.1.0 in this regard?

I will wait for others to see the same problem, though it might take months for them to upgrade their firmware to this version.
