The AC1750 refers to the wireless speed of the 2.4 and 5ghz bands. And it might not be better coverage than your old router just depends on the space it needs to cover. And yes the gigabyte is referring to the the ethernet connection.

While your new router may not provide any noticeable difference with Internet access, it can significantly boost speeds between devices within your home. If you transfer a lot files between computers (you are backing up your data, aren't you?) or stream videos from a PC to a TV, then a router such as this one can make it possible to do these wirelessly. Keep in mind that every Wi-Fi connection is a two-way street, so your devices must also support the higher speeds offered by the router.
On the other hand, if most of your usage involves accessing the Internet, then any basic router can handle a 20 Mbps Internet connection. An AC1750 router could very well be overkill for the task.
