CM1000 vs. CM700 cable modems
Why does the CM1000 have download speed of up to 1gb and the CM700 has a download speed of up to 1.4gb

The most you'll get out of either of them is 1Gbps since that is the limit of the Ethernet port. I don't know why modem manufacturers (not just Netgear is guilty) advertise prominently the theoretical max speed of the cable interface when this 1Gbps ethernet port bottleneck exists.
I recommend avoiding the CM700 as it has an Intel Puma 6 chipset. Do a search online for "Puma 6".
I'd get the CM600 or CM1000 depending on if you want DOCSIS 3.1 support or not - both have chipsets made by Broadcom. The CM600 is like $90 on Newegg/Amazon lately.
