Can I use the Modem CM1200 for 2 routers?

So my dad and I use different routers. His is pretty old so I bought one for myself awhile back (Nighthawk R7800). I’ve been connecting mine to his with a Ethernet cable since his is connected to the modem. That modem only has one ethernet port. Been getting by with this situation for awhile but now that I’m fully back from college, I can’t stand the constant ping spikes and freezes when playing games. I was thinking of methods to make this work but I believe just buying a whole new modem entirely could help. Would the NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem CM1200 work for 2 routers? I know it has 4 ports so I just wanted to know if it’ll be what I’m looking for. Or just open to any suggestions too!

A modem doesn't care how many routers you hook up after it. Use a small switch to connect to the modem and the 2 routers.

But, the ISP does care how many devices you try to get a public IPv4 address for. Most limit based on MAC address and hand over only 1 address. If you're lucky, like me, you can get IPs for 2 devices.

Who's your isp?

Thats the key. mosts ISP's only support 1 public ip address meaning only 1 device can be connected.

But not all have the requirement. so potentially you can. but its contingent on the ISP.

And even if the ISP only supports 1, sometimes you can pay them for extra or for a business class line that will let you.

Or you could look at what modem he currently has and why he's getting ping spikes/lag. the R7800 is a solid router.

so curious where they're coming from.

Sparklight supports more than one WAN IP.
