I cannot and never could access a safe address to enter my router

I have Cox cable now but i have never been able to acces router webpage, had a netgear  router once I loved it.  but it was the same. I usually just leave them, because I can never get into them. I keep getting new ones because I thought hey were getting hacked.

There are no cookies allowed

Error 401, you have no authority to (can't remember exact working, but it comes up everytime I give up on putting my passwords in.  No one seems to know why, CenturyLink had idiots working there.  I called Cox and he had me enter my http://192.168.0.1/ into a browser address line. As soon as I put the ip address in, had the little page thing that tells you no cookies accepted.  I told him this and he sawi "enter it anyway, they won't be interested unless they are already in your computer".  I hear somthing about a portal that you can use?  Why won't it let me enter safely?  I keep having to revert to factory default because the new password doesn't work.

Also, this might be for a different discussion, but when I enter the gateway (unsafely of course) I noticed that the performance log ?  I have mostly error and critical.

I have a Windows 7,Home Premium, Dell 570, I have a PC that is wired with ethernet and and a Macbook Pro and with priner pick up the new SSID and Key I'm changed in the router.

I unplugged everything to take pc to a specialist to see if I was hacked. I'm not.. Took it home, hooked up my PC to the unit,Couldn't get internet at all,. I troubleshot the  Broadcom ethernet adaptor and there was a main dns driver missing.  Now the icon said there a netword connection but there was no internet.

I had to do another factory default, this time I left the ethernet cord in the port, which I don't usully do.  I left the name at default (ssid) but changed the key wpa number and passwordt.  I was able to get internet then.  Then i took ethernet cables to the mac and couldn't hook up with any password.  Don't know what else to do bur a factory default again.

If anyone can answr at least part of what they think is going on, certainly would appreciate it

Your browser is probably set up to block all cookies. Do a web search for enable cookies <browser>. Replace <browser> with the browser you are using (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome). Follow the instructions to enable cookies on your browser.

HTTP error 401 occurs whenever you fail to enter the username or password correctly when logging into a website. Websites are sometimes referred to as portals. All modern consumer routers have portals that one can log into for administrative purposes.

I apologize if you already know the following but there are two kinds of passwords maintained by a Wi-Fi router. There is an administrative password which is used to log into the router's portal, and there are password(s) for connecting to the router's Wi-Fi network(s). My hypothesis is that you are having troubling logging into your router because you are entering the Wi-Fi password instead of the administrative password.

You didn't provide the model of your router, so I can't give you specific instructions for changing your administrative password, but it's not in the same place where the Wi-Fi password(s) are set. You should definitely change the administrative password to reduce the chance that hackers gain access.

Constructive comment: Proofread your writing before posting. Everyone can be forgiven for making a few typos, but it was not easy to make it through your writing.

Re: I cannot and never could access a safe address to enter my router

I'm sorry about the typos. I thought I did okay until I posted it and read it.

My router is a Netgear CG3000D cable wireless gateway router provided by Cox, however they don't provide the information to access the router.  I will try your suggestions and get back to you.

Thank you for speedy reply!!
