Need suggestion
I have been trying to decided on a new modem. It is all very overwheleming. So many technical things to consider that I just can not wrap my mind around to make a slection. My son is a gamer. We live in a rual area our download speed is almost 8. Upload with current speed test is .54. Centrylink is the only Internet service in our area. When we first got service with Centrylink year ago the service we were receiving was AWEOME. I could connect every device in the house at one time (tv, gaming system, phones, ipads) and conncection was perfect. I did purchase my own router/modeum combo, but after about 4 years we started to get a lot of lag time, and router/modeum needed to be replaced. Currently we are using a modem/router combo from Centrylink......that sucks!!!! Since COVID our service really sucks, I can not even watch a Youtube viidoe or have my phone connected to our wifi, with out cause lag time problems for my son. I have read and reseached trying to make a decison for a new modem (I have a Google Nest that will be setup so I do not need the router.) My son will be wired to the modem (He is PC gamer).
Our conncetion is DSL
Son would love to vidoe stream his gaming ect. upload speed is to slow.

The issue with this is your slow speeds. 5 years ago 8mbps down and 0.5mbps might have been sufficient. Problem is that over time, IoT devices (web cameras, smart switches, Alexa/google home devices), background processes like web browser updates, phone updates, app updates, and even things like smart tv's checking back in to home all add up. Having 1 device do that isn't an issue but when multiple devices are all using "just a little" background data, it adds up quickly when you're on a slow connection.
As well as data usage has increased. Things like streaming video, gaming, video chats, security cameras, are all using more data, which also adds to it. The connection isn't fast enough if you do use 4k devices.
Even web browsers are using more data as advertisers have more data/interactive ads that use more data.
It all adds up to more data useage and a slow connection doesn't help.
Try this. Disconnect your devices from the dsl router. simply unhook them and change the dsl modem/routers ssid to something else.
Then connect that 1 tv back to the router and see how it works. As well as speed test it.
Are you getting your speeds? Does your 1 device work?
If so, you might be utilizing the full speed of your network by multiples of devices/background processes/etc.
sadly, 10 years ago a 8mbps was fairly decent. By todays standards, its what dialup was compared to dsl.
And upgrading the modem isn't going to help if the isp can't supply the modem with faster speeds.
it might be worth checking into a hot spot or even Starlink for faster speeds.
