Nighthawk AC1900 C7000V2 Modem Router slow download speeds

I have 600 MBPS coming into the unit and if I get within 3' of it, I can get about 211 coming out via WIFI. That is with the Ookla speed testing. Unplugging it for a period doesn't change anything. Firmware is up to date. What can I do to improve this? Is the modem router unit bad, shot, junk? Thanks.

Re: Nighthawk AC1900 C7000V2 Modem Router slow download speeds

1. what wired speed to you get?

2. are you testing over 2.4ghz or 5ghz?

3. what actual device are you testing the speeds on?

4. You won't hit 600mbps over wireless on that router. 300-400mbps is more around the range you can expect over 5ghz for that devices.

It is premature to declare your modem/router unit as bad, shot, or junk.

Testing internet throughput over a Wi-Fi connection is primarily a reflection of the device you are running the test on.

Ookla native application test is appropriate for your connection if your are using a computer connected to the modem/router through a good Ethernet cable.  If your results indicate you are obtaining the throughput that compares favorably to what you are purchasing from your ISP, then you can focus on configuration of your Wi-Fi.

According to this post it appears to be a regular problem with this modem router unit.

There are a lot of variables involved with the throughput capacity of a Wi-Fi connection.  Placing blame on the modem/Wi-Fi router hardware would be relatively low on the list.  At the top of the list would be the configuration of the Wi-Fi router, capacity of the device you are using to test, and the radio frequency environment where you are testing.  The environment includes home construction material and interference from other Wi-Fi sources,

"But Wifi is only around 270 Mbps." This is pretty good and around the top range that you seen on 5Ghz AC wifi. Most devices top out at around 300-500Mpbs. You'll not see anywhere near 900Mpbs on 5Ghz WiFi on this model modem.

My ethernet speed with a new cable & Ookla testing is about 94 with 2.4. I'm using my laptop.

Your statement above does not make a whole lot of sense.  New Ethernet cable connecting what to what?

Over the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, a test throughput of 94 Mbps is not bad.  How old is your laptop?  What operating system?

Have you run a throughput test using your laptop connected to the 5 GHz band?

Re: Nighthawk AC1900 C7000V2 Modem Router slow download speeds

All right. Connecting the modem router to the pc via an ethernet cable connection then running the Ookla speed test on the 3- or 4-year-old HP updated windows 10 pc model #15-au063nr. Can't run 5GHz with ethernet. Have previously posted 5GHz Wi-Fi speed. Within 3' of the modem router I got a 211, within 6' of the modem router I got 198 with the Ookla speed test. The Exfinity speed test isn't worth the effort to run.

I previously said I had 600 coming in, I am wrong there, it is 400. How can 94 going out be "not bad", when you have 400 going in? That doesn't make sense either.

The throughput coming in is over the cable.  I agree the Xfinity test is not worthwhile.  Stick with Ookla.

What you have coming in over cable is what you should have going out over Ethernet to a computer.  You will not see that over Wi-Fi.  If you have Wi-Fi in at the computer at 100 Mbps over the 2.4 GHz band that is good.  If you have Wi-Fi in at the computer at 300 Mbps over the 5 GHz band, that is good.

Does your laptop have an Ethernet input port or is it Wi-Fi only?

Check your hardwired pc/laptop to see if its actually connecting at gigabit speeds. When you hit 94mbps it usually means you're only connecting at 10/100mbps speeds and not gigabit. And you're hitting faster over 5ghz so the modem is supplying more speed.

You must not have had your laptop/pc hardwired in at that time as there isn't anything connected to the lan ports.

That is the way I use it. Would you like me to plug in the ethernet to test it for that info?

Re: Nighthawk AC1900 C7000V2 Modem Router slow download speeds

Because we want to see if you're actually getting the speeds you pay for. You won't max them out wireless but wired you should be able to. Its pointless to troubleshoot why your wireless is only getting 200mbps if you're modem is only outputting 200mbps because of a poor connection or bad provisioning.

I plugged the ethernet in and ran three test for the heck of it and my best was 98.

Here is an ethernet screen shot. Looks to me like it is running 100.

Your not connecting at gigabit speeds. If you're device is gigabit capable, try a different Ethernet cable. Make sure it's a good quality cat 5e or better cable

Re: Nighthawk AC1900 C7000V2 Modem Router slow download speeds

Since I don't use ethernet, does that really matter? I found this attachment for my WIFI. It shows a speed of 780 which is pretty darn good, but I don't get why it doesn't show up in the speed test if that is correct.

This is all, definitely, very technological. Hats off to whoever came up with all this.

Re: Nighthawk AC1900 C7000V2 Modem Router slow download speeds

That'd be your link speed. That's not actual throughput. throughput tends to be around 55-65% of link speed.

But we first need to figure out if you're actually getting the full speed from the modem. That's why we ask the hardwired question. If your hardwired speed from the router/modem is only 200mpbs, your wifi isn't going to be any faster than that as the bottleneck is what the modem is supplying.

Again, its pointless to troubleshoot wifi until we determine if you're actually getting the speeds you pay for.
