Not true at all. If you use the exact same SSID and password when you reset, your IoT devices will reconnect automatically. When your router was running satisfactory, did you happen to save off a configuration file? Maybe you should explore that option as it makes a firmware default reset reasonably easy to configure by importing a previous configuration file.
Agree, attempting to configure or trouble shoot a gateway using a mobile device application is a waste of time.

Unfortunately, this is a consequence of flaky power. No brand will be immune to that sort of thing. The good news is that your device survived the blip. Many don't.
As well as setting up the device as @Kitsap has suggested, which will restore everything to the previous state, there is an even easier way of going about things than changing any settings on the modem/router itself.
.
Then, after the thing resets itself you just go through the "restore" process and end up where you were before the power went off.
It is a pity that so many people seem to miss this essential recovery measure.

At first some mobile devices could connect to the WiFi and had sporadic internet connection. Now no mobile devices or IoT devices can connect to the router, and even the hardwired Arlo/NetGear camera router that is hardwired to the NetGear router isn’t connecting to the internet.
The usual reply when this happens is to ensure that you reboot the whole network in the correct order. But that is kind of difficult when you have a combined modem/router.
I’ll look into backing up my configuration, but I’ll be looking for a different brand router.
Bit late to back up the configuration. You should have a copy there of that already so that you can restore the configuration after this happens.
As to another device, experienced users prefer separate modems and routers. CAX devices are better than some with their separate router firmware, but it still doesn't have the flexibility of a modem followed by a router, which gives a much bigger choice of options.
