Not sure what exactly you're expecting by "optimizing" it.
What's your goal or what are you attempting/expecting?

Re: USB HD connected to C7000v2
I use the drive with two computers one with Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit and one with two operating systems, Windows 10 Pro 32 bit and one with Ubuntu 20.04. since this drive is the only drive accessable by all systems I use it for some information storage other than backup (music, pictures, help files, etc.). I have found over the years that defraging a hard drive (at least for windows OS s) is advantageous. Thank you for your response.

Re: USB HD connected to C7000v2
You could always connect it to a windows pc and defrag it.
But on newer drives, usually the bottleneck isn't the external hard drive. Its usually the usb 2.0 interface that slows things down.
That's why you see people migrating to NAS's
