c7000v2 Absurd Product

This product does not allow the user to install new firmware and Spectrum will not perform this task.  The solution to this problem is NEVER buy another Netgear product.  Ignore the other "solutions" as they are bogus.  BTW, when the firmware is outdated, which could be a couple of months after purchase, the phone app no longer works so no way to control the network.  AND the mesh extender you bought will no longer mesh with the router.  Netgear products are designed for immediate obsolescence.

You realize this is a provision of the docsis cable spec? Its not something netgear controls. 

And all manufacturer's run into this issue. 

The only one that is potentially different is the CAX line. they partition the modem off from the router side so the router can be updated independent but the modem side still can't. 

And they weren't able to do that until cpu's for routers were powerful enough to do it.

So you might see more manufacturer's start doing it.

But until now, the CAX was the first modem/router combo device that could. 

 

If you don't want that, make sure not to buy modem/router combo devices. 

Its actually one of the primary reason we recommend buying a modem separate from the router.

Why does Netgear produce a product that cannot be updated and sold without a marketing disclosure:  "Please note that this product cannot be updated by your ISP nor you, the purchaser, therefore, this product may begin to fail within one year of purchase and be obsolete and unusable soon thereafter."

Why don't they all do that? Again, this isn't limited to netgear. This is a system wide issue. 

Also, because its marketing/sales.

1-Neither ISP (will) nor user (can) update modem/router firmware.

2-APP can no longer access the modem/router as the APP hangs at firmware outdated and directs the user to loginrouter.net.

3-Login on the website via computer can access the router, however, there is no portal for firmware update.

4-Eventually the firmware obsolescence will slow and  brick the modem/router with the ISP and Netgear pointing fingers at each other.

Problem with the system is the ISP has to certify it and that costs them $ so they don't. Netgear can't force them to update it. All they can do is supply the files and hope they do. I've seen that cause issues with the ISP pushing the update (if it isn't current for your isp)  or letting you access using the app. If that doesn't help, I'd avoid the app anyway and the gui has better info (imo). You can use a mobile device using the browser.

Its faster with modem router combo devices. Its even worse with ISP supplied devices as they're even more rarely updated. Again, one more reason you won't see the people on here recommending combo devices.

Only when ISPs stop supporting DOCSIS 3.0 spec on there network will these modems become un-useful. Even then one could use the C7000 in a faux AP mode configuration for it's wifi capabilities after that. I remember buying my first DOCSIS 1.0/2.0 cable modem many moons ago, was happy to have my own and it was all up and running. Come to find out that my ISP was phasing out 1.0 and 2.0 so had to go buy something that supported 3.0. I only had the modem a few months. This happens when new DOCSIS specs come out and ISPs deploy them. DOCSIS 4.0 is next and give it about 3-5 years.
