BBC Article: Netgear router exploit detected

Hi - just read this article. (See below.)  It sounds like Netgear has known about this problem for a few months, but this is the first that I've heard about it.  We purchased a Negear Wifi Cable Modem Router, N300 that was installed in early July.  How do I check to see if we've been hacked? It sounds like one of the ways you can be hacked is if you allow remote accessing to your network.  I don't believe that our wifi/router was installed that way, but what can I do to make sure that that option is turned off?  Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Kwo, I think your router model would be the C3000. If that is correct you can get the user manual here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/C3000/C3000_UM_21Aug2014.pdf Or you can find the link on this page: http://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/cable-modems-routers/C3000.aspx See page 15 "Log In to the Modem Router". And page 83 "Remote Management".

Re: BBC Article: Netgear router exploit detected

I just updated my WNDR3400v2 router since I did a check an a newer firmware was available. Get your user manual for the router. Log in to the router and find the area to check for firmware update. Mine has a button to check for this.

Sorry if my confidence is low that all potential Netgear products affected by this exploit have been identified. Cannot rule out stopgap facesaving measure. And how long before the next exploit is forced out into the open. You router vendors are struggling to play catchup in the IoT nightmare.
