C3700-100NAS ReadyShare - Disable This Feature
I purchased this to cut the cord on Comcast/Xfinity rental fees. It has a high learning curve, so unless you have been through some cpu issues that you have fixed by Googling and editing the registry, this modem is too complex for you. That's because if you don't log in and set up a strong password with network names, your security is compromised. Security is also compromised by the default setting to enable Readyshare without an admin password protection.
I have googled this issue ad nauseum and found little to no help. Inside the Netgear forums, people suggest disabling the USB option, but that only prevents use of the USB port on the back of the router/modem unless it is listed as an approved USB device. So, that is not the answer.
It turns out that there is a simple solution after all. In the menu on the left side of the settings (this is the screen after you have logged into the router/modem from a browser), there is a READYshare menu button. Click on that. First, enable the admin password protection for everything listed, even though you won't be using it. This is just for the added security. You will find this in the furthest column. Then uncheck the boxes under the "Enable" column, which is the first column.
Remember to hit "apply" at the top and you are good to go. READYshare will be disabled and will no longer appear in your list of network devices.
Hope this helps someone.
