Hello Torup
Yes Netgear did send a email to customers about making sure to update your firmware. If you have a cable modem you can not do this manually the firmware will be updated automatically through your ISP.

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
When I started to update the updating I found out that at a certain point I was asked to log in using the IP-address 192.168..1.1 (if I hadn't changed it). I do not recall having changed my IP-address but my notes indicate that my IP-address is 192.168.1.3. If I continue the updating will my IP-address then occur and not 192.168.1.1?
Thank you for replying!

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
I understand now that no IP-address will “occur”. Sorry for my ignorance!
However when I try to log in using either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.3 (se above message) it doesn’t work. Using …1.1, I’m asked to log in with username and password. So I conclude that my notes are correct and that my IP-address is 192.168.1.3.
But trying to log in, it doesn’t work at all. This is the message I get:
The site can not be reached
192.168.1.3 rejected the connection.
Test that
Check the connection
Check the proxy and firewall
As browser I’m using Google Chrome.
Could you please help me out!
(As you already noticed, I have very limited computer knowledge. So please if you can help me out, keep it on a simple level.)
Thanks in advance!

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
Yes I have tried to log in with ww.routerlogin.net and no, have not changed my log in password.
Is the log in password the same as the SSID password? I have tried to login with my wireless password = SSID but have not been successful. When I use "admin" and "password" to log in, I can see that the SSID password is the correct one. I have no other log in or password!
Loged in with "admin" and "password" I can see is 5 boxes:
- Internet
- Wireless
- Attached devices
- Parental Controls
- Guest Network
but no "Maintenance" nor any "Router update". How to proceed??? Soon I give up!!

Hello Torup
You are not going to see the router update as those are done via the ISP.

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
You are telling me that I'm not going to see the router update, etc (se below) , but why do the instructions first communicated say, that after having logged in to the router:
4. Click Maintenance > Router upgrade
5. Click Browse and find the file ......
6. Click Upgrade. Do not .......
Can I do ANYTHING to finalize this matter in upgrading the firmware?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
This was a mass email for all devices and with cable modems the user can not upgrade the firmware on other netgear devices they can so if you have a cable modem you will not see this.

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
I use a wireless network using a cable when required. Does that mean I can not see the update? This I told you earlier and in that case why wasn't I told earlier? And if not, what can I do, if anything? I suppose that you are doing your best trying to help me, but this time please give me a straight answer without rewritings or some words thats leads to nowhere! You must be tired of this conversation as much as I am.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Torup
If you are using a Netgear cable modem/router combo there is nothing to worry about with updating the firmware as it will be automatically done from your internet service provider.

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
What we have here is failure to communicate.
> If you have a cable modem [...]
That is, if your ISP is a cable TV company, ...
Cable TV ISPs generally want to control the firmware on cable modems
which are connected to their networks, so you may not be able to update
the firmware on your cable (TV) modem. IF you have a cable (TV) modem.
> [...] So if I have a wireless network [...]
Whether your computer is connected to your router with an Ethernet
cable or wirelessly is an entirely different (unrelated) question.
Cable-TV (coaxial) "cable" and Ethernet network "cable" are two
different (unrelated) cables.
Step 1: Identify your device. For which (Netgear) device are you
considering a firmware update? If it's only a router, or if it's a DSL
modem/router, then you probably can (and should) update its firmware.
Other problems:
> [...] I do not recall having changed my IP-address but my notes
> indicate that my IP-address is 192.168.1.3. If I continue the updating
> will my IP-address then occur and not 192.168.1.1?
Define "my". Every device in your network has its own IP address.
Strictly speaking, every network _interface_ in your network has
its own IP address. A computer could have multiple interfaces,
and each interface would have its own IP address. In most simple
arrangments, each computer will have one active interface, so it's
usually safe to think of each device as having one IP address.
Your router (whatever it is) probably has the address 192.168.1.1.
Your _computer_ is probably the device with the address 192.168.1.3.
> Using #1.1, I'm asked to log in with username and password.
That's probably the router. You will need the router's
(administrator) user name and password to use its Web interface.
(That's different from the wireless network SSID and passphrase.) The
default values might be "admin" and "password", but these could have
been changed.
> So I conclude that my notes are correct and that my IP-address is
> 192.168.1.3.
Bad conclusion. Your _computer_'s IP address is probably that
192.168.1.3.
> But trying to log in, it doesn't work at all. This is the message I get:
>
> The site can not be reached

Yes, because you're not running a Web _server_ on your computer, so
there's no one there for your Web _browser_ to talk to. The router _is_
running a Web server, and that's what you get when you point your Web
browser to 192.168.1.1.

With my weak psychic powers, I don't know what your device (router?)
is, so I can't provide the exact path to its firmware update controls,
but I'd guess something like: ADVANCED (tab) > Administration > Router
Update. If you disclose the actual model number of this device
(router?), then you might be able to get better directions on that
point.

Re: Important Security Update from NETGEAR, June 21, 2017
Hello,
Thank you very much, again. When I ask you a question you are never replying to it, you just go around the question. Like:
Last time's question: I use a wireless network but use a cable when required (as in Netgears previous message). Does that mean that I can't see the updates?
Your answer: If you are using a Netgear cable modem/router combo there is nothing to worry about with updating the firmware as it will be automatically done from your internet service provider.
Could you pleas give me a straight answer; yes or no?
Once more, thanks!

That would be easier if you revealed what your device (router?)
is. Until you supply some basic information, you may not be able to get
a useful answer to any questions.
