Modem reboot helps for 5 minutes then needs repeat

Greetings,

I am experiencing up and download speeds that vary alot.  I pay for 110mbps  down / 10up.  At times it gets so slow that I can't load web pages.  When I do a speed test it shows between 4-6 down  and 6 up.  I reboot.  Speed now 60 / 11.  Repeat speed test several times.  Eventually it gets to 100ish / 10.  Everything works great.  Then within five minutes it's back to single digit download speeds.

I often get a mesage that I'm not connected to the internet even though the modem and router indicate that I am connected.  My phone won't update it's operating system anymore because "An internet connection is required".

Another quirk I'm experiencing (which may be related, or not) is that while using my phone online and I get the "WIFI network doesn not appear to be connected to the Internet" message, I simply have to shut wifi off in my phone and then turn it back on and I'm good to go until it happens again a few minutes later.  When we have company over, they experience the same problems on thier devices.

Needless to say, streaming to the TV is a problem as well as my wife's Zoom meetings she does from home for her work.  Yesterday she was hosting a conference and lost her internet connection even though the modem and router said they were connected.

Rebooting isn't the solution as I'd have to do it a dozen or more times a day.

The modem was new this year, but these issues predate it.  It just seems much worse lately.

The router is a Netgear R6400

Any assistance is much appreciated.

Looks like he fixed it.  Everything is working as it's supposed to.

Re: Modem reboot helps for 5 minutes then needs repeat

do you have a screen snip of the cable connections page and the event logs?

Also, remove any splitter, amplifiers, or signal attenuators for the line.

Check the line for kinks, damage, old/bad/corroded/cheap connectors and replace them if there are.

I recommend moving the modem to right where the coax comes into the home to prevent wiring in the home from being the issue.

Hi plemans, Thanks for your reply.

Can't seem to upload that log.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

The log entries all are critcal 3, Error 4, and Warning 5, Notice 6

These are the most common messages from the log:

**Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=94:a6:7e:c6:92:54;CMTS-MAC=00:17:10:91:70:07;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;

Overriding MDD IP initialization parameters; IP provisioning mode = IPv6

2 of these entries are dated 01/01/1970...The others are all current dates

The cable company replaced all the cable and connections from the telephone pole to the modem.  When that didn't help I bought this modem several months ago hoping it would help.  There is a new splitter that I will bypass as a test.

The modem is 6 feet from where the cable enters the house.

When I tried to send this post I got message saying that this site had removed invalid HTML.  Not sure what that is about.

You should be able to attach screen snips. get the cable connections page.

the log is indicating line issues but it helps to have the cable connections page as well.

That's why I said take a screen snip. Make sure to get the cable connections page with snr/downstream/upstream/correctables.

Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots (microsoft.com)

Re: Modem reboot helps for 5 minutes then needs repeat

Thanks plemans,

Any thoughts on resolving these issues?  I will research further, but can you give me a ballpark for what power levels are acceptable and how I might change them?

Re: Modem reboot helps for 5 minutes then needs repeat

I had my ISP send a tech out.  He replaced the modem with a DOCSIS 3.1 and about 8 feet of old 5.9 coaxial cable from where it comes in the house to the modem.  The previous guy didn't do this...

Hopefully that's the end of it.
