Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
I have a N300 C3000 cable modem+wifi router connected to comcast xfinity cable internet. When I connect any device using the ethernet cable, I get speeds of upto 225 Mbps (as against the promised 150Mbps). When I connect any device using Wi-Fi, I haven't been able to clock higher than 25-30 Mbps. The cable modem + router meets all the specifications of my comcast xfinity connection. The device is even on the supported devices list for my plan. I have tried fiddling with lot of settings with no improvements whatsoever.
Settings I have tried:
Changing fragmentation length
Changing CTS/RTS threshold
Changing MTU size
changing channels, Wi-fi speed was in fact poorer in absolutely unoccupied channels.
Devices I have tested Wi-Fi speeds with:
Lenovo g50 laptop running windows 10 and Realtek RTL8723BE 802.11n Wireless LAN
Motorola Moto x, supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Apple iphone 5s, supports 802.11 a/b/g/n
Google Nexus 5, supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Apple iphone 6, supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
and other mobile devices.
Tests have been done at close range, medium range and long range with and without obstacles in between and with as few as 1 to as many as 6 devices connected at te same time. The speed doesn't vary much.
The modem+Router has been running the latest firmware version as well: V2.02.08
I have almost given up on getting decent Wi-Fi speeds. Currently I am getting only about 12-13 Mbps.
Also, this is a replacement device. I thought there might have been a hardware issue and had asked for a replacement. The replacement device hasn't unfortunately been any better.
The issue cannot be with the cable connection as I have been consistently getting speeds over 200 Mbps on every wired device I have used to test. The problem seems to be on the Wi-fi router side of the device.
I tried to switch to 5ghz but the device doesn't seem to support 5ghz bands or the settings didn't have an option to switch, not sure which.
Please help me fix this issue. I would be happy to get 50-60 Mbps on Wi-FI
Thank you

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
I connect devices using ethernet only while testing. All devices are always wirelessly connected. I have tested wireless connection speeds with no wired devices connected. All wireless devices get similar speeds of about 14-15 Mbps

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
I just purchased this C3000.N300 cable gateway and am very pleased with it. I had another brand gateway and was getting slower speeds than promised by Comcast when using my computer wirelessly. I contacted Comcast and they advised anything connecting wirelessly would be much slower than connected via eathernet.
I connected my devices that were wireless with a eathernet, that I was able to, and my speed increased. So, as far as my computer, I went to hardwire so I could connect to the internet faster. On the other devices, I can live with a slower connection.
Hope this helps.

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
Did you try changing Wi-Fi channels? The current channel could be congested by neighboring Wi-Fi networks.
It can be really difficult to get decent speeds at 2.4 GHz. There are often too many Wi-Fi networks nearby. With N300 class Wi-Fi, you should expect to get a total throughput of around 50 Mbps to 70 Mbps. It'll be less if you are sharing the channel with other Wi-Fi networks or if there is interference from non-Wi-Fi sources.
Your best bet is to switch to 5 GHz. Unfortunately, the C3000 only operates at 2.4 GHz. There are 3 options:
- Replace the C3000 with a dual-band router/modem
- Add a dual-band router and put the C3000 into bridge mode
- Add a dual-band Access Point

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
I have been having intermittent speed problems ever since I have purchased this unit. If I attach my computer via Ethernet, the speeds are above what my contract calls for - 50 mpbs. If I link up via wifi, the speeds fluctuate anywhere from 5 mpbs to 75 mpbs. The latter is a rarity.
My household links everything via wifi but there is never more than 3 devices at a time using it. In fact, I can't even link our MacBook Air to Ethernet; it has to link via wifi to the Internet. Also, all our other IOS devices. I have tried everything, changing channels, plugging and unplugging, calling my cable company (Comcast says it is your problem). I am getting frustrated being monkey in the middle.
Please fix this problem or at the very least, give me a credit so I can go out and buy a new device (I purchased this last year).

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
Have you taken survey of nearby Wi-Fi networks and eliminated any sources of radio interference (e.g. baby monitors, 2.4 GHz cordless telephones, microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, wireless speakers, etc.)?

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
The only thing we have is the microwave and that was niot in use. I tried changing the channel again and switched from auto to 6. It seems to have increased the speed considerably but I will continue testing for a couple of days since this has been tried before and worked only temporarily. Thank you you for your response.

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
Well, you should probably run a Wi-Fi analyzer and take stock of what Wi-Fi networks are active around you and the channels they are using. Then pick the least used channel. There are plenty of free Wi-Fi analyzer programs that you can download. Netgear's Genie program even has one. Pick one and try it.
As I mentioned further above, switching to 5 GHz can dramatically improve speeds. I'll recap the options:
- Replace the C3000 with a dual-band router/modem
- Add a dual-band router and put the C3000 into bridge mode
- Add a dual-band Access Point

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
I am unable to put it on 5 mghz because my wifi printer won't link up with it. I have to keep it at a lower speed.

If I can keep the download speed at 45-50 and the upload at 12, I'm fine. It's already going down since yesterday so I'll keep testing at this channel and see if that works for me.

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
Putting it into 5 GHz would be a cool trick, especially because the C3000 doesn't support 5 GHz.
For future reference, you should not post your public IP address.

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
I'm having same/similar issue. Cable co has been out several times and ckd everything. My different issue is that I get fluctuating Mgbs also on wired as well as wireless. I get similar results as prev. stats...all over the place! I went thru Netgears steps to correct issue including changing channels, wireless settings & thresholds which improved somewhat but didnt stop the fluctuating Mgbs both wired and wireless. I bought the N3000 in Sept 2016 so not yet 6 mo old but it seems to be consistent issue w/many users of this product. FRUSTRATED!!! And why hasnt there been firmware to fix this issue???

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
A Comcast tech at my home finally hit on the answer. I had to set up my gateway with my computers on wireless 5G and my printer at the lower speed. Everything works great after 3 years of aggravation.

Re: Poor WiFi speed compared to Ethernet
Thanks for your quick reply. I DID chg channels yesterday b4 posting and went thru ALL the steps Netgear had...it did help some and seems to have stabilized today. I dont want to have to buy ANOTHER router when the C3000 should work...at least according to what as advertized. I will wait a few more days to see if the chgs I made keep holding. Thanks again for your help!!
